if you cut an object at the center of gravity, would both parts weigh the same?
say for example a broom. i saw this question in my physics textbook. it says that one part would be heavier. it does not give an explanation and i dont get it.
arent both sides of the center of gravity equal, thus determining the positioning the center of gravity?
It may be asking you to question the nature of the cut, which must be both through the center of gravity, and through the support point. However, I think that's less likely than it asking you to consider the
sum over all i (Ri*Wi)
nature of how the c.g. is calculated.
Consider your broom, and find the c.g. by "eyeball":
DDD=x==========
(here, the DDD represent the bristles, and the === the handle. The c.g. is marked with an 'x'). The total handle section is 12 units long; with, say, density d_handle, but the c.g. is at the 'x', so we effectively have:
i) a bristle section, of weight w_bristles, plus a little due to one section of handle, so the weight on the left is w_bristles + g*d_handle.
ii) a handle section, of weight g*11*d_handle.
Now, consider this:
DDD====x==============================
Here, I've more than doubled the length of the handle section, but the c.g. hasn't moved all that far, since the bristles weigh so much more than the handle. Here, we have
i) w_bristles + 4*g*d_handle
ii) 30*g*d_handle.
IF the two sections weighted the same before, they certainly can't now, and yet we cut the broom at the c.g. each time.
Moral: The c.g. depends on how the mass is distributed, and thus can radically change the amount of weight (which doesn't care where the mass is distributed) on either side of the hypothetical cut.
