Tips to the Perfect Leather Furniture Care
Maintaining leather furniture is actually a relatively easy process. Many people tend to make cleaning leather out to be an extremely difficult task. On the contrary I'd like to share with you some leather cleaning tips that will ensure you know the basics, and to keep things simple and easy for you the next time you have to clean your leather furniture.
Buying leather furniture is quite expensive but people who could afford it do not mind paying extra if it will make their homes more beautiful and if the furniture will last for a long time. However, no furniture is sturdy enough that will last long if not given proper care also. Leather materials are very delicate. If not cleaned regularly, it could produce a foul smell and emanate inside your room.
Protect your leather furniture by closing the drapes and adding humidity to the room because exposure to direct sunlight and extremely dry rooms may cause leather to dry out, fades and lose its softness. Position your furniture at least 6" away from any heat source and it is a good idea to discourage your pets from climbing on the leather furniture.
Cleaning dirty leather is quite simple. All you have to do is to use dish soap and water and rub over the solution with a buff cloth. Also, make sure that you only use real soap for leather products, and not detergents, as they maim the finishing of the furniture.
The next thing in this list is desks; it should be prevented from the scratches on the surfaces. The desks should be always cleaned with the soft cloth and specially made desk cleaning materials.
If a chair becomes damaged by an accident there is no need to worry. With the right supplies your chair will look as good as new and you will not even be able to tell it was ever damaged in the first place. The first thing that needs to be done is for you to locate a compound that matches the color of your leather chair. If you go into a furniture store they may have a repair kit available and give you some tips on how to use it.
Place leather furniture about two feet away from radiators and heat vents. This can dry and crack the leather. Avoid putting leather furniture in front of windows or in direct sunlight. Sunlight can cause the leather to fade and become patchy looking.
What's the best way to care for my furniture? Ask five different people, and you'll get five different answers. But most "experts" agree on a some basics. First of all, remember your mother is always right: Dust frequently. Keep away from feather dusters. They just move dust around, flinging it into the air, moving from one item to the next. Broken quills have sharp edges and could scratch the finish.
Besides the material, you need to choose the product that does not need lots of maintenance so you will not spend your money for the cost of maintenance. You should get the product that is easy to clean so you can not only save your time but also save your money. Besides that, you need to take the product which has design that is appropriate with your home so you can enhance the look of your home at the right way.
Just remember, saddle soap will remove manure, clumps of dirt, and the grime from a saddle after being out on the trail. Hopefully your furniture is not subjected to the same environment. To prolong the life of your fine leather upholstery, use leather care products that are chemically engineered specifically for upholstery leather.
After you have cleaned your leather couch or chair it is necessary to apply a conditioner. This puts the natural oils back into the leather and works like a Scotchgard which will inhibit dirt and stains from being absorbed and make cleaning easier the next time. Applying a conditioner every three to four months provides additional protection from everyday living and can also protect the furniture from possible damage caused by any direct sunlight.

can someone give me care tips for a chocolate leather sofa?
this is the first time i''ve purchased leather furniture and don't konw the first thing about caring for a leather sofa.Tips for keeping it clean, also tips for keeping it from cracking. It's a really expensive sofa. Thanks
You really do need to look after your leather correctly to keep it in good condition.
Using household products and 'old wives' remedies are very short sighted when it comes to cleaning and caring for leather and can become very costly in the long run as problems they generally cause will be costly to put right. (although it does keep people like ourselves busy as we rush round fixing problems caused by using the wrong things!!!)
You need to use a good quality water based foam leather cleaner. (LTT Leather Shampoo) With light coloured leather dye transfer from clothing can be a problem although using a good quality leather protector (LTT Leather Protect) will help inhibit this. For dye transfer and ingrained dirt you may need a much stronger cleaner like Maxi Cleaner (this should be used with caution)
DO NOT use anything containing oils, waxes or silicones. (Most 'conditioners' contain waxes or oils) and furniture polish (pledge) contains silicones which will eventually destroy the finish on the leather. Most car cleaners also contain oils or waxes so should not be used as they leave residues on the surface of the leather which attract more dirt which eventually leads to cracking.
BABY WIPES are the worst thing you can use as they will destroy the finish on your leather. This has been verified and proved to be the case. They are actually a very strong product and this is why they break down the finish. Leather is not like skin and should not be treated as such.
Saddle soap should never be usd on upholstery leather or garments it is meant for saddles which are very different from todays finished leathers.
A lot of leather wipes contain chemicals which will also destroy the finish or leave residues on the leather which will damage it. They are not cheap in the long run as you would need a lot to clean. A bottle of foam cleaner should do your car about 3-4 times.
Fairy liquid contains more salt these days to get dishes clean and this will break the finish down on your leather. This has been verified by the manufacturers (as with the baby wipes).
Magic Erasers should not be used unless you are going to renew the finish on you r leather. We have tested these recently and they sand away the top finish on the leather.
You should also follow cleaning with a good water based leather protector which will act like a 'scotchgard' and inhibit dirt and stains from being absorbed and make cleaning easier the next time. Conditioners are totally unnecessary and only a product push by manufacturers.
Dry leather needs rehydrating with water and oils and waxes should not be used as the natural oils do not dry out of leather. Wiping over with a damp cloth regularly will help to do this.
It is important to maintain a regular cleaning regime cleaning dirt off the surface regularly and inhibiting the absorption of body oils into the leather with a protector is the best way of doing this. The only 'moisturizer' a leather needs is from water.
The alternative is a brand new product on the market called Lazy Leather. This is the latest technology in cleaning and combines an effective cleaner with a protector. It is quick and easy to use and should be used as a maintenance product once your suite has been cleaned or from new if you have just bought it.
Using incorrect care products is usually the cause of deterioration in the leather as unfortunately most car care products contain waxes and oils or silicones which do not do the leather any good.
