Is the brush on my Kirby Classic Omega supposed to turn?
The vacuum works just fine but the brush roll doesn't turn, making it hard to pick stuff up. I'd figured since the vacuum was so old, that it just wasn't supposed to turn. But I think I'm wrong. Did I assemble it incorrectly or is it really not supposed to turn?
Kevin, if you've had the front nozzle part off recently, then, yes, you most likely reassembled it incorrectly. The brush roll is most definitely supposed to turn. When you have the nozzle assembly off and laying in front of you with the brush side up and the little hump pointing away from you, check in around the mid section of the brush roll for a black rubber belt. If there's one there, check for the condition of said belt. It shouldn't be cracked, have any spots where it's been burned by the motor shaft, or shouldn't have any cuts or slices across it's width. If it seems in good condition, then you should take hold of the front emblem thing on the front and twist it to one side or the other, whichever way it will go till it stops. There's a large hook on the back side of the emblem shaft, which when turned back, will catch the belt if it's setting inside the nozzle in approx. the correct position and it will lift it up as you continue to turn the emblem as far around as it will go. Once you have the emblem thing turned all the way around, and the belt lifted up as far as it will go, then you should reinstall the nozzle on the front of the machine. You do that by putting the little cutout places on the lower front area onto the shaft setting on the lower edge of the front face of the machine, just under the shaft that sticks out the front. When you have the little cutouts mounted on the shaft, then tipping the nozzle up will align the top hole with the belt shaft and the belt will be held in the perfect position to drop right onto the shaft after you secure the nozzle by twisting the little handle lock down, that's on the top. Then you twist the nameplate thing around the opposite way till it stops and that should set the belt right on the shaft and the brush roll so it will run when you start the machine,.
